These are technological, fast paced and exciting times... but close your eyes for just one second whilst in your comfortable armchair and you'll find that you are already falling behind having just missed the latest technological breakthrough! With gadgets and technology moving forward at incredible rates, how will furniture change during the next 10 or 20 years? What will the furniture of the future look like, and will it do anything other than give you a soft, comfy place to rest your derriere??

The integration of technology to allow total connectivity could be commonplace in furniture of the future; with the internet, TV, games and entertainment at your fingertips. Touch screen smart-phone or ipad-style devices built into armrests would be a fairly safe bet... maybe we will see the use of projected touch screens used in living room sofas and dining room tables. Your interactive dining table might allow you to check the mornings news, order new groceries and control the ambient lighting.

Perhaps furniture will automatically adjust its positioning, alter its colour and create an ambience dependent upon your mood? Maybe we will see armchairs that, at a touch of a button, transform into fully functional house-cleaning robots which autonomously begin cleaning every time the chair is out of use!... perhaps not... but we are sure that we will see some really interesting developments in the near future.

Touch screen surface technology is already appearing in some restaurants today. Diners are able to order food, enjoy on demand entertainment and customise the design of their table using their fingertips at restaurants such as Inamo in London (pictured above). It might be safe to say that this kind of interactive surface technology will enter our households within the next 10 years.

Our dining tables, or perhaps even walls might become interactive displays through the use of multi touch technology and projectors. We could view and share photos, videos, connect to the internet and change the design of our furniture using only our fingertips.

No matter what amazing developments come our way, furniture will always need to retain its comfort and practicality. A living room sofa in 20 years may be able to microwave your dinner, order your shopping and analyse your home decor to tell you when you need a design overhaul... but if it doesn't have the 'relaX-factor' that we enjoy in our furniture today then what's the point!?

Made famous by the movies, through TV, and by their timeless designs we present our three suggestions for the greatest pieces of furniture of all time... This chair has influenced countless designs since and has been made even more famous through it's use in film and TV. The most notable appearance of this classic design came on Big Brother (Season 1) where it took the centre stage as the 'diary room chair' everyday for millions of viewers. This is an unmistakably funky chair, distinctive yet extremely comfortable! This furniture icon is famous for its radical design and was brought into the Hollywood spotlight thanks to Men in Black 2. This style of seat was distinctive enough to be used on a poster campaign for a high profile sci-fi movie. It fitted in beautifully with the high tech subject of the film and does indeed look like something beamed down straight from a UFO's cockpit! The final piece of iconic furniture which we will add to our list is the Barcelona chair and ottoman (below), designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929.

Designed as part of the International Exposition of 1929, the Barcelona chair is a beautiful piece of furniture which is said to have its roots in an ancient type of folding Roman seat called the Curule.

These three pieces of furniture royalty have an infinite appeal which allows them never to look outdated our out of place in our homes. The big question is... can you add to this list? The greatest thing about Autumn is the incredible array of colours we get treated to. It's the perfect time right now to step outside and enjoy the amazing spectrum of reds, oranges, yellows and greens. Here's a small snapshot of today in Edinburgh just a stone's throw from *hip furniture's* offices... yes the sun isn't shining and there is an endless covering of cloud but let's be grateful the rain hasn't (quite) started yet!

One of the delights of living in Britain, especially in Scotland, is our 'loveable' weather. So variable and unpredictable that one moment it's all sunshine and blue skies... the next it's torrential rain and apocalyptic clouds... today we have a happy compromise!
